Nethermills (NM) Fields 2, 3, 4 (and 5)
A preliminary foray (HS,DS), unfortunately without GPS, in this field to check out the position of Dr Grieve's Site A turned up 135 flints along the terrace. After that, with help from OFARS members, we walked the Northern half of the field systematically at 2m apart, covering the terrace and the 'island'. However, the rest of the field, was walked at approx 5 m apart as flints were very few below the terrace and 'island'.
CR 08 Nethermills (NM) 1 and 1A
This field was ploughed later, but as it was not drilled until after NM 1 and 2, HS and DS took the opportunity to have a look at it to see if the scatter from NM 1 continued upstream, and to check out a scatter noted by Dr J Grieve. They walked 2m apart along the W edge, along the River edge (S) and the E edge. Several less systematic traverses were made from edge to edge.
Attention, then, was focussed on NM 3, and NM 4. As a result of snow cover, no field-walking took place during the 3 weeks between 1-21 Feb. Afterwards the fields were very muddy, with standing water in parts of NM3. NM 3 Except for an unploughed strip at the S (river) edge, the S part of the field, with the broadening terrace, was walked at 2m apart. The upper, more hillocky and stony part was less intensively looked at as random traverses resulted in just 1 or 2 flints. NM 4 Parts of this field, along the W edge and the E end of the S edge (the corner around the JB Kenworthy dig site) were walked at 2m apart. With drilling imminent, HS and DS went 'walkabout' over the remaining part of the field during the last 2 days to gain some idea of the spread of the scatter. NM 5 A very brief look (by HS and DS) round the edges and along the diagonal on 24 Feb yielded 3 flints; not included in the table.

DIARY
Although NM 2 was ploughed in January, conditions of snow, frost and drizzly rain a complete survey of the terrace wasn’t accomplished, but other areas were briefly looked at. In 2011 the terrace , including the north and south banks, was rewalked, and other areas again looked at. We had hoped to finish NM 4, but lack of or late ploughing prevented this.
In 2009 the original intention was to follow NM 1 with NM 2, but this field was not ploughed until much later. Owing to a subsequent lack of heavy rain/no soil weathering, the flints were not well exposed. However HS and DS had a brief look along the terrace to locate a scatter known from previous fieldwalking.
Milton Cottage was ploughed again in 2011, and most of the field was walked.
A brief survey of the west end of the terrace in NM 2. and a survey of part the most intensive area of NM 1

Sadly, owing to lack of and late ploughing, NM 4 was never finished under OFARS (or NESARS)
The OFARS fieldwalking project took place from 2008 - 2012. Many thanks to all our OFARS fieldwalkers especially Angela Groat (2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012) and Marlene Weston (2008 and 2009). Also to family members Premi and Jovita Fawcett (2008, 2009, and 2011).
